• Commissioner Becomes Highest-ranking Openly Gay Mayor in the Country
Fort Lauderdale – Ken Keechl has been elected Mayor of Broward County for 2009-2010. Serving Broward’s District 4 as Commissioner, Keechl was elected unanimously by the Board of County Commissioners to lead Broward’s 1.8 million residents.
As the highest-ranking openly gay Mayor in the country, Mayor Keechl will champion the rights of all people. He has been recognized for truly making a difference in the lives of his constituents, supporting policies and laws that protect the civil rights and liberties of all Americans.
Keechl sponsored Broward County's Resolution seeking repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy; sponsored an amendment to include transgender individuals to the Broward County Human Rights Act; and has made domestic partnership benefits a key component for competitive procurement contracts.
Serving in his first term as County Commissioner, he quickly demonstrated strong leadership and was elected Vice Mayor in 2008.
"Earning the respect of my colleagues is important, and I appreciate their confidence in me," said Mayor Keechl. "But most importantly, I appreciate the opportunity to serve all citizens of Broward County, and to lead our County through the challenges we face in the coming year."
Since his election in 2006, Mayor Keechl has supported a shared vision for a different Broward County. He is an advocate for lower property taxes and decreased spending. He also advocates for an environmentally sensitive, yet business friendly approach to running Broward County.
Mayor Keechl is a native Floridian who has spent his career protecting the rights and values of Broward County residents. He graduated from Florida State University's Law School in 1987. He has served on the Individual Rights and Responsibilities Committee of the Florida Bar, which focuses on civil rights issues, including those facing minorities, the elderly, and the disabled. He has also served as a volunteer attorney for Broward Lawyers Care, representing pro bono clients who could not afford legal counsel. According to the authoritative Martindale-Hubble legal credentialing service, Keechl holds an AV rating by his peers ("A": Very High to Preeminent for Legal Ability; "V": Very High for Ethical Standards).
