June 29th, 2009…. Following a successful event in Washington DC earlier this month, the Velvet Foundation is pleased to announce its purchase of the Kameny Papers Project’s remaining artifacts. The collection is now part of the Foundation’s permanent collection.
Dr. Franklin E. Kameny is one of the first leaders of the modern gay rights movement. He helped organize the first public protests for gay rights at the White House in 1965 and coined the phrase “Gay is Good” in 1968 as a radical statement challenging the belief that homosexuality was a mental illness.

"We could not be more happy with the acquisition of the Kameny Papers. While many believe that the entire collection went to the Smithsonian Institution and the Library of Congress, a substantial portion of the collection did not," said Timothy Scofield, Executive Director of the Velvet Foundation.
"The items in this collection are key to telling the full breadth of American experience. We are honored to have gained the trust of Frank Kameny, the Kameny Papers Project, and the LGBT community to house these artifacts in our permanent collection and to display and interpret them for the American public," said Timothy Scofield, Executive Director of the Velvet Foundation.
“Signs of Change: Pioneering Protests for LGBT Civil Rights,” a special exhibition featuring historical artifacts from the Kameny Papers Project, was presented at the Artists Inn Residence Gallery as part of Capital Pride on Thursday, June 11, 2009. Dr. Franklin E. Kameny, OPM Director John Berry, Author David Carter, and Furniture Maker Mitchell Gold, attended the event as special guests.
