HARTFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--At the annual conference of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA), Aetna (NYSE:AET) received an achievement award for its work in improving the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals. The GLMA Achievement Awards recognize efforts to improve the quality of health care for LGBT individuals, to improve the workplace environment for LGBT health care workers and to advance LGBT civil rights. GLMA Achievement Awards are given without regard to recipients’ sexual orientation or gender identity.

Aetna has made significant investments in providing relevant and personalized information to help our members make the best decisions about where and when to seek health care,” said Lonny Reisman, MD, Aetna’s Chief Medical Officer. “We are honored to receive this recognition from the GLMA because we have worked hard to make LGBT employees and members feel valued and accepted and to help them find health care providers that understand and respect their unique health care needs.”

Aetna’s LGBT Steering Committee and Aetna’s network of LGBT employees have been instrumental in shaping Aetna’s strategy to drive better health care for LGBT individuals. As part of its efforts, Aetna became the first health benefits company to link its online provider directory – DocFind® - to GLMA’s provider directory of primary care doctors, specialists, therapists and dentists who are knowledgeable and attuned to LGBT concerns. GLMA encourages providers of all sexual orientations who welcome LGBT patients to sign up for the provider directory. Aetna has supported the GLMA through a series of grants, including a sponsorship of the annual conference in 2008 and 2009.
